Graffititude Burgess Salmon Team Building Narrative

1]Introduce the Session

[Real and actual world and immediate future]

Welcome to the activity section of your day. My name is Rob and this is Elodie, both of us will be facilitating the next part.

You are divided into four separate groups for the duration of the session, and will be embarking upon activities within them.

2 Parts to the Session You will be experiencing street art via our “introducing stencil art“ spray session, using water-based =spray paints where you will spray a street artwork to take home with you, and you will be experiencing graffiti and style writing using our special software that transforms your smart devices into limitless ink pads.

[Ordinary World] Introduction to Graffiti and session [Ordinary Wordl] By using the word ‘graffiti’ I may have already created a reaction, as the word conjures up different feelings, from different people. Living in an urban space we are often surrounded by it and people’s opinion on modern graffiti varies massively, but did you know that graffiti dates back to the beginning of recorded human history?

Over 40,000 years ago, ancient human wrote/drew on the sides the caves where they lived and spent a lot a lot of time. This cave graffiti depicts images of life at the time, which was scratched or etched onto the walls.

In fact the word graffiti actually translates from the Latin language as “the writing or scratching of letters or words onto walls or surfaces”.

So from this evidence we can say that writing on walls is a human instinct, a primal urge and part of our (human) evolutionary development.

There are four motivations for graffiti/writing on walls: 1.Xxxxxxxx information/ facts -pompeii 2.Cxxxxxx to let the world know you exist - new york 3.Xxxxxxx aesthetic/ enhancing the environment 4.Xxxxxxx defiance/ vandalism The powers to overthrow governments

Now it’s time to start the practical side of things, could you or scan the QR codes for your separate team, press the start button, in a moment your screen will change, and please follow the instructions that you see on the screen.

Did everyone’s smart device work? The exercises on your smart devices will be in both Portrait and landscape, so please follow the messages on the screen to turn you device when you see them.

Okay will now go for that spray session with Elodie, and groups 2 to 4!

[Exercise 1 intro - Practice With Brushes] When style writing or graffiti writing there are three main finishes that can be achieved, these are: a rounded paint pen which as the name suggests results in a rounded finish, a chisel tip marker which is has a rectangularrect end and a square finish, and a fat cat spray can which is a wider finish.

Your first exercise will be to experiment with the three different styles via an exercise which also enables you to explore the Limitless Ink pad.

[EXERCISE2 Intro- Graffiti Name Graffiti name: every graffiti artist has a name which is usually a pseudonym or nom de plume which means that if anyone member of the public read the name of the street there would be no way of tracing that name back to the originator. Often a writer will choose a name which is between three and six letters long. The reason for this is that a shorter name is quicker to write, and often, as you will be aware, graffiti writers put their names in places where they shouldn’t! And therefore they need to be quick, otherwise they may be arrested.

To help us with the next exercises, you will need a graffiti name, if you don’t already have one, we have a random name generator to help you. Please spend five minutes deciding upon your graffiti writer name.

[EXERCISE2 - Name]

[Exercise 3 - Intro ‘Hitting The Streets’]

It's now time to hit the streets as a graffiti writer, and leave your mark!

The next exercise will enable you to create the unique set of letters for your graffiti artist.

Choose which brush you prefer, and then craft each letter each letter in turn and build up your graffiti name.

There are two screens for this exercise after you have chosen your medium.

The first is where you design and craft your letters.

When you are happy with the letter you have designed press the heart shaped button to save your letter, and then move onto creating the next letter of your name. Also on this screen is a button to clear the whole screen, shown as a document above the heart . And also controls for brush size, colour of black or white and an eraser where you can erase parts of what you’ve drawn. The second screen is where you place and position your letters.

Use as much of the screen as you can when sizing the letters. This will be in landscape mode.

You can switch back between the screens of you want to change or add new letters.

When you have finished, press the export button. You have about 7 minutes to do this.

Any questions?

[Exercise 3 - Introduction To Teams/Crews and campaigns] DECIDE UPON CAMPAIGN Almost all graffiti artists work within a team or a crew. This provides support and collaboration both of which are essential so that collectively, you can consider big objectives, and achieve big outcomes that on your own, you might not be able to achieve. The next activity is a team/crew based activity. You need to discuss within the team a theme or a campaign that you would like to raise the profile of, as when you place something on the streets, it can easily go viral and receive millions of eyeballs from around the world. The theme or campaign you choose can be anything, it could be an environmental campaign or it could be words of advice and wisdom to the younger generation, it could be about “what changes you wish to see in the world”, you could even embark upon an anti-graffiti campaign! The theme of the campaign is up to you, it can be a big issues or a fun, small issue, it's up to you and the rest of the crew to decide upon.

__________________________________________________________________

[Exercise 4] CHOOSE LOCATION AND WRITE YOUR MESSAGE Exercise for where you hit the streets with your campaign and start to bring public attention to it. Decide upon the location of where you’re going to paint. Remember different locations have different risk levels and depending how important your campaign is you should choose based upon the risk level. If you choose a high profile location for a light-hearted campaign, it could be the last time you ever write on the

[Exercise 5] Ultimate Location and Placement Positioning and location are essential in order for your message or your name to be seen.

What's the point of taking huge risks without achieving a big gain?

One graffiti writer took this to the extreme, when his chosen location was so effective, he managed to offend the Queen by obscurring a much loved view of Windsor Castle!

See the image below of a genuine Sun newspaper headline!

In order to achieve this set of lettering, Helch needed to use a writing tool that was different. He took into account the scale of where he wanted to paint, and a marker or a spray can would not have been suitable. He used a paint roller on a pole. Enabling him to create his letters many metres above his head. By using this tool, he had to compromise his normal writing style. The next exercise is called "be like Helch", where your graffiti artist, will use a roller on a pole, and attempt to leave their name in a high profile location.
